I started my period in 9th grade I think. On the day my mom went out of town. And because I was a late bloomer I knew it was going to happen eventually. And it started so light that I was unsure. But how awkward to be at dads condo (parents were separated at this point) and to have him have to help me with it all. I mean he has a bunch of sisters so hopefully it wasn't new territory to him and he was calm (as he always is) and handled it well because I was really nervous and uncomfortable. I have been lucky and my family has always been very supportive, understanding and open to talking about things. Even uncomfortable things.

This is gold! When I was 12 years old I got my first period, it lasted for a month and I had extreme cramps and pain. Years later I figured out that I have endometriosis. I talk about this openly in the hopes of actually get people to understand what’s happening in a female body. And I’m so happy that I have a family that have no shame in talking about this.

Ahhh...didn’t mean to post yet!........... When I got my first period, I just went into my older sister’s supplies and took some for myself. When we went grocery shopping next, she said she needed more and I said that I needed some too and that was the end of it. My sister has endometriosis and I remember her curled in the fetal position, sobbing and the adults at school and the doctors telling her to stop being dramatic. I also remember *screaming* at them because my sister is one tough cookie and if she was crying and unable to move, I *knew* something was really wrong. As for my own experiences, my cycle was very irregular and I was prescribed birth control to regulate it. I am extremely sensitive to medications and every form of hormonal birth control I tried, made me into a different person; to the point that I was suicidal because I KNEW that what was going on in my head, was not something that I was in control of and I just wanted to feel normal again! After a decade of struggling to find “the right drug”, I asked an incredible Nurse Practioner at my college health clinic about non-hormonal options. She referred my to the county health services for a copper IUD. 12 years later, it was the best medical decision I ever made for myself and I *wish* I could remember her name, because I would send her the biggest damn gift basket I could buy. She changed, and probably saved, my life because she was willing to listen and had an open mind.

My family didn’t really address the issue of bodies and bodily functions at all. We just didn’t talk about it at all.

Love it! Oh my gosh! I forgot about tying the pads on! I don't remember having 'the talk' with mom. I remember school movies and talking to my Pastor in Confirmation classes. My parents had to approve the sex talk with the Pastor. At least in school we were separated from the boys. In Confirmation we were all together. Periods. My son heard the title and gave me the side eye. Listened to this without him. Lol 🙃
